on VAX VMS and RISC ULTRIX systems
o Digital is providing COHESION solutions for technical software
and business applications development, for new and existing
systems, including comprehensive services
=======================================================================
INTRODUCTION
One year ago Digital announced the COHESION environment, its vision for
software development, or CASE, including existing products and services
and plans for new ones. Digital's COHESION approach is based on
bringing together various vendors and industries into one comprehensive
software development environment. Its scope includes development
solutions within the NAS environment for:
o All departments and industries
o All project sizes, from small teams to large projects
o All styles of computing, distributed or centralized
o A choice of development platforms (VMS and ULTRIX systems, with
access from PCs)
Digital's overall view of software development is to enable
organizations worldwide to develop and deploy software for the
multivendor environment. Specifically, there are four main aspects of
Digital's COHESION environment:
o Services and support enabling you to implement better software and
development technologies and practices and to link software with
business planning.
o Architectural standards: interfaces and components delivered by
Digital's Network Application Support.
o A comprehensive approach for the integration of tools.
o A complete family of tools that automate all software development
lifecycle and management tasks.
OPEN ENVIRONMENT FOR DEVELOPING NAS APPLICATIONS
Digital's development environment has long been acknowledged as a
particular strength by the computer industry. Software vendors such as
Cincom, Information Builders (FOCUS), and Andersen Consulting
(FOUNDATION) use Digital platforms to do much of their software product
development aimed at multivendor environments.
In the past, most of this development was done on Digital's VMS
platform. But by using NAS interfaces, Digital has made significant
progress in delivering a common development environment across VMS and
ULTRIX systems. This reinforces the benefits of the Open Advantage.
You can now order the following products for delivery between the last
quarter of 1991 and the first quarter of 1992 on VAX VMS and RISC
ULTRIX systems:
o CDD/Repository V5. 0 and a new graphical interface tool,
CDD/Administrator V1. 0, for repository administrators
o Application Control Architecture (ACA) Services V2. 0, enabling
tool-to-tool communication, used to implement control integration in
the DECset V11 environment
o DECplan V1. 0, providing sophisticated, distributed project
management support from small to large projects, with integrated time
and task management
o DECset V11 software, providing proven capabilities to support
application implementation and testing
o DEC VUIT software (see Digital's Customer Update dated June 14,
1991), a graphical approach for generating Motif calls for windowed
user interfaces, available on Sun systems (UNIX) as well as VAX VMS and
RISC ULTRIX systems
There is also additional support of multiplatform development and
deployment by key software vendors. For example, Cognos is announcing
the availability of PowerHouse, its 4GL, on the RISC ULTRIX platform.
ENABLING SOFTWARE VENDORS TO INTEGRATE WITH COHESION
A key decision point for users choosing a development platform is the
availability of CASE applications from software vendors and Digital.
The COHESION environment represents a family of products and services,
from Digital and software vendors, that automate the full range of
software development lifecycle and management tasks.
One year ago, Digital announced that it had begun work on an
information model for the repository, a basis for software vendor
integration. Now Digital is announcing progress in this area to enable
software vendors to begin the work of integration:
o The process for defining the Repository Information Model is
underway and involves joint work by Digital and software vendors. See
the article in this issue entitled "CDD/Repository Information Model
V5. 0" for more information on the process and the software vendors
participating to this point.
o Details are available on the actual model incorporated in
CDD/Repository V5. 0 to which software vendors are integrating today.
o Digital is announcing ACA Services V2. 0, to enable tool-to-tool
communication to automate the flow from one activity to another, as
exemplified in DECset V11 software.
o Interfaces for presentation, control, and data integration are
available on VMS and ULTRIX platforms, so tool vendors need only do
integration work once to support multiple platforms.
The net result is that the COHESION environment represents an
attractive target for software vendors, complementing Digital's
products to provide comprehensive lifecycle and management support for
software development.
ENABLING USERS TO IMPLEMENT COHESION
Digital is announcing COHESION solutions for a variety of industries,
backed by a full suite of services. Increasingly, users and industry
analysts have come to understand that the major barriers to CASE
success are not technological, but organizational. Combining solutions
with the necessary services as described here is the key to success in
implementing the COHESION approach. Examples:
o COHESION Solutions for Information Systems--A solution set covering
development of new and maintenance of existing applications for Digital
and IBM systems. o Telecommunications--A COHESION solution involving
Digital and a software vendor (TeleSoft) has been defined by the
Telecom Industries group. See the article in this issue entitled
"Telesoft Integrates Product with COHESION Environment."
Training
Training is key to successful implementation of CASE. Digital has
incorporated COHESION integrated online training into new products such
as DECplan and DECset software and existing products such as DECdesign
software. (See the articles in this issue entitled "DECplan and Time
Manager Products" and "DECset V11 Programming Environment.")
There is also a full range of courses and training videos available.
The "Understanding CASE" series, featuring noted CASE consultant Roger
Pressman, incorporates a new self-assessment module that enables you to
probe just how effective your current procedures, methods, and tools
really are. See the article in this issue entitled "COHESION Support
Services" for ordering information.
Services
Services and support enable organizations to implement better software
development practices. Digital Services provides a comprehensive group
of services, from assessment through evaluation and installation of
CASE. For a list of these services, see the "COHESION Support
Services" article.
